College Park, Maryland, United States

Set in a bucolic college town suburb, the state of Maryland’s premier public university has the advantage of being just ten miles from downtown Washington, D.C. The proximity only adds to the creature comfort of strolling its grass field grounds hemmed in by 18th century structures of red brick and columned porticos. If you want a photograph of the ideal college campus, look no further. Here rogue technologist, Apex has decided to blend in with a mixed crowd of spirited students while she develops and implements her strategy for fighting the D.C. power brokers who are bent on implementing the GCS project. With a school year catchment student population of 40,000, Apex hides in plain sight appearing as another eager learner while she works with colleagues from around the world on a sabotage plan against the most sophisticated global infrastructure project ever developed.

St. David’s, Wales, United Kingdom

Stretching the tip of Pembrokeshire into St. George’s Channel, the tiny Welsh city of St. David’s is the dominant destination of the namesake peninsula, which is home to the area’s ancient cathedral. Bypassed by the motorway, and not convenient to any standard transportation, pilgrims are undeterred when they detour into preserved parkland to be at one with the territory’s patron saint. To this distant outpost, GCS brings its secretive global team to acknowledge its role in changing the living reality for billions of human beings. From the Cathedral library, a recognition will be established that sets up the future stories to come in the Life Online books series.

San Francisco and Tiburon, California, United States

America’s golden gate lies at the entrance to San Francisco Bay if you go north you may find yourself in gentle Tiburon where small shops and restaurants line the few crowded streets, go south and you are in San Francisco. The Bay Area is unquestionably one of the country’s most spectacular natural settings, where the water blocks off one neighborhood from the other but iconic bridges link them back together. In the past three decades, the area has come to represent the future of the country, and perhaps the world, as the technology industry established its beachhead first in the flat suburbs of Silicon Valley and increasingly in the dense downtown of the fabled city. The fast-paced development and deals culture is a contrast to the last century fade of the industrial age. Within the region’s limited acreage, tech billionaires and their creative class colleagues will define the future of the world whether the average consumer likes it or not.

Washington, D.C., United States

In an instant the name means power, mismanagement, competition, and waste, to those who work within its brawling halls and those that watch events unfold from afar. The capital of the United States, occupying a diamond wedge between two former slave states, betrays none of these attributes. The hill and river parkways of the self-professed mid-Atlantic is a bustling center for tourists bent on capturing their history and transient residents occupied by the swinging demands of party politics. Turmoil inside the Beltway is an opportunity for those waiting to make their mark which is the atmosphere setting the background for much of The Origin Point and its conflict among all of the major characters.

Making, perhaps unnoticed, cameo appearances are the actual locations of the G8 and NATO summits in 2014. Events do take place in these locations but neither is actually mentioned by name in the novella.

Brussels, Belgium
The European capital was the replacement location for the G-8 in 2014 after the leaders decided not to invite Russia, which was scheduled to host in Sochi.

Newport, Wales, United Kingdom
The NATO summit was held in this seaside location leading GCS to select a nearby location for its meeting to acknowledge the work of Secretary Davenport.
